30 March, 2023 Conference “Documenting Refugees from Eastern Europe” in Polish Academy of Sciences – Scientific Centre in Vienna (Boerhaavegasse 25, 1030 Wien)

This debate will involve key experts, representing various research centres in Europe. It will launch with keynote lecture by Philipp Ther (University of Vienna, RECET), referring to refugee crises that have occurred in the past and reflect on the present, particularly the displacement of people from Ukraine as a result of Russian aggression. This will be followed by three thematic panels. The first panel will discuss flight and migration during both World Wars in Europe with contributions by: Piotr Szlanta (University of Warsaw, Polish Academy of Sciences – Scientific Centre in Vienna), Jochen Böhler (Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust-Studien), Michal Frankl (Czech Academy of Sciences), moderated by Katarzyna Nowak (Central European University). The second panel will focus on Ukraine and Ukrainian experience of war refugee, both past and present discussed by Kamil Ruszała (Jagiellonian University), Peter Ruggenthaler (Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institut für Kriegsfolgenforschung), Dieter Bacher (Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institut für Kriegsfolgenforschung), Malwina Talik (Institut für den Donauraum und Mitteleuropa) chaired by Christoph Augustynowicz (University of Vienna). This event will conclude with a roundtable about projects documenting modern war and contemporary war refugees: Katherine Younger (Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen), Sofia Dyak (Lviv Centre for Urban History), Anne von Oswald (Minor – Projektkontor für Bildung und Forschung), Kamil Ruszała (Jagiellonian University).
